KUALA LUMPUR, 7TH JANUARY 2024 – In celebration of the beauty and intricacies of the dyeing and weaving techniques to produce the fabric called ikat, LimKokWing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) collaborates with IKAT 2.0 : KL Edition.
In line with the IKAT 2.0 : KL Edition theme, ‘Dreamweavers’, the show is supported and carefully curated by Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim, Group Chief Brand Officer of LUCT, with the concept of “capturing dreams from the blue skies, gliding and soaring high just as an eagle and weaving magic from across the world.”
Dato’ Tiffanee said, “The IKAT 2.0 : KL Edition Dreamweavers fashion runway, will be featuring designs by 20 of our very own fashion students from the Faculty of Creative Arts and Lifestyle, as well as my own designs under the Limkokwing Fashion Club brand.
Displaying Borneo’s vibrant cultural heritage alongside modern versions of traditional textiles, our aim is to preserve the uniqueness of the ikat technique, give it a zest of life, inject a youthful heartbeat to it and bring back its glory days.”
She continued, “The word ikat means ‘to tie’ or ‘to bind’ in Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Indonesia. We are also embracing this definition to ikat or bind the senior and traditional ikat artisans and the new media artists. This way, this beautiful artisanal heritage will continue to live on.”
Ikat textiles are typically made from natural fibres such as cotton, silk, or wool, and the designs are created by resist-dyeing the yarns before weaving, resulting in a unique and often irregular pattern that is characteristic of ikat. Ikat designs often feature intricate geometric patterns, abstract motifs, or cultural symbols.
Outside Malaysia, ikat fashion is prevalent in several countries worldwide, with notable examples in Indonesia, India, Guatemala, Japan, and Uzbekistan. Each region has its unique style and cultural significance tied to their ikat patterns.
Dato’ Tiffanee concluded, “The IKAT 2.0 Dreamweavers runway, reminisces and continues to celebrate the educational vision of my late father, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr Lim Kok Wing, which is to preserve, foster creativity and innovation of Malaysia’s heritage and empower the nation’s creative younger generation. This is also what we hope to encourage and emulate on the runway,” concluded Dato’ Tiffanee.
The IKAT 2.0 : KL Edition digital fashion fantasy show is organised by EDT in collaboration with LUCT.
